SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability

Sustainability is a fundamental concern within the fashion retail industry that continues to evolve and grow in importance. At Bodywear Lab, we are firmly committed to adopting more responsible business practices to better serve our clients, the environment, and society.

We have invested in a sustainability strategy that builds on our leading design and marketing practices and responsible operations. As we look to strengthen the sustainability of our company and business, we invite our clients to join us in our guidance. It is within this context that we have produced an inaugural Sustainability Report which informs readers on the tangible steps and methods we are enforcing company-wide that will reduce our carbon footprint and ensure that we are as green as we can be. It will also outline our goals from subsequent years, how they have been tracked and measure the impact of our sustainable efforts to date. We will also be modifying our approach where necessary to ensure we achieve our targets and are creating a more ethical approach to business.

Limiting Our Impact

Promoting Local Manufacturing

We are currently working with one of our partners, the UKFT, to help promote local manufacturing and the importance of producing and manufacturing everything locally. There is still a lack of knowledge within the retail industry on this topic, hence the importance we have placed on educating business owners.

Giving Back To The Community

We upcycle our leftover materials that are unusable from production by giving deadstock to local universities who then utilise it in creative and fun ways during their studies and coursework. Whilst being an eco-friendly way to upcycle deadstock materials, it also helps the students financially as purchasing new fabric can be expensive. There is also an internal recycling policy in the workshop to ensure plastics, paper, glass and metal are recycled.

In The Materials We Use

Garment Life:  We want all of our client’s customers to get the best possible use of their garments. We’ll only produce garments with high-quality textiles and high-quality craftsmanship to ensure that they have the longest possible lifespan. LCE reduces its water and energy consumption by using deadstock and recycled fabrics.

In the Production Process

Our production processes are designed and continually improved to minimise waste and energy consumption. Our cutting process is also optimised to ensure we waste as little fabric as possible. Rather than bulk cutting – a process responsible for much of the supply-chain textile waste produced by the fashion industry – we manually cut each pattern piece, ensuring we get the best use from even the smallest pieces of fabric. Across the fashion industry, 35% of all materials used in the supply chain end up as waste before a garment or product reaches the consumer and 40% of the world’s fabric production is turned into wasted fabric before it can be made into a garment. Furthermore, our collections are made in small batches ensuring that no style will be overproduced and end up as a waste product. All fabrics we use have certifications and are eco-friendly or upcycled and thereby saving from becoming waste.
